Success! Like these wildflowers, I’m emerging after a tough winter. In December, our kid got sick with a bone infection. We had some scary moments, but thanks to the wonderful nurses and doctors at the Children’s Hospital, our kid is thriving again. For months, I couldn’t write anything—creativity provided little in the way of solace. Next on my list is the literary thriller Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton. I (mostly) loved her previous novel and I’m excited to read this one. I was lucky to see her in March at a Wordfest event. Intimidatingly intelligent and funny! Catton said with both Birnam Wood and The Luminaries, she knew what the ending would be before she started writing, but she didn’t know how it’d all play out. “If you’re going to surprise the audience,” she said, “you have to have the capacity to surprise yourself.” In my first mystery novel, I surprised myself by not knowing the identity of the killer until I was halfway through writing it. I tried plotting out the sequel, but that hasn’t worked, and I find myself in the same predicament. But I think it’s more than that. Like many of us, I’m concerned about the chaos in the world and my negative inner voice keeps nudging me, asking, “Why write? What’s the point?” And, of course, I turn to books, music, and art to seek solace and understanding. Therein lies the answer. Creativity is part of my life. This morning, I went to the Calgary Wordfest event featuring the book Good Mom on Paper. Writers on Creativity and Motherhood. It filled my soul to listen and laugh with the panel of writers/moms discuss the joys and struggles of a carving out a creative life. This week’s Twitter post by poet Seamus Heaney also resonated. Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. On the way to Elkwater Lake in Cypress Hills, we stopped at the Medalta Pottery Museum in Medicine Hat. In their art gallery, we discovered the painting by Billie Rae Busby that now graces the wall in our living room. Both my husband and I fell in love with her moody landscape, but it was the title that cinched it for me: Forge Ahead. The first time we invited my friend Julie and her family over for dinner, she spotted Billie Rae’s painting on our wall. “I know her!” she told me. Turns out they are friends and (former) co-workers. A serendipitous moment as I was forging a new friendship in our new hometown. Forge ahead with hope, my friends. I’d prefer it to be wood burning with double glass doors but would settle for an infrared barrel sauna. I’d make it solar powered. That’s possible! Someday… The Finnish consider saunas to be a part of their national identity. In a land of five million people, there are over two million saunas. My kind of country. I would like to visit there. Someday… I mapped out the characters for my novel in a Fitness World sauna. What was I thinking? A (hard) lesson learned about where and when to submit your work. I clung to the morsel of positive feedback – they liked the setting in the sauna. Several drafts later, I enrolled in a critique class taught by author Lori Hahnel. Over the course of a few months, I submitted a total of thirty thousand words (almost half my novel) for feedback and in turn, I had the chance to read and critique four other writers’ works-in-progress. I love the dark justice meted out in the story, Vermin, and the money-making venture of the newly widowed character in Nurse Ingrid. Vermin recently won an Alberta Literary Award for best Short Story Collection.
